Belize

This summer session study abroad course focuses on the contemporary musical culture of the African DDSC05312iaspora in Belize. Through the study of musical performance practice, students are immersed in Kriol and Garifuna cultures. Garifuna language, dance and music was declared a UNESCO masterpiece of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001. Geographically focused in Punta Gorda and Hopkins, Belize, participants will study music and dance, attend guest lectures, take part in regional events, build musical instruments, study endangered languages, and visit prominent historical and archeological sites.

Specific activities will vary depending upon individual interests but each student will have the opportunity to perform and study music, dance, and culture, participate in tours, attend music and dance performances, explore Mayan archeological sites, and experience Belize’s biodiversity.DSC05297 DSC05302 DSC05314 DSC05334
